Nuova release per i driver grafici Ati, che si portano così alla versione 9.02. Con tale uscita si è fatto qualche piccolo passo avanti nella visualizzazione dei video in Xv con un composite managere attivo, like Compiz. Però i passai fatti in avanti in tal direzione sono ancora troppo piccoli: adesso i video non sono più decentrati (come accadeva in precedenza) ma si hanno dei blocchi durante la riproduzione. Per quanto riguarda le prestazioni in generale, meglio andare indietro di qualche mese ed installare gli 8.12 se si ha molto a cuore le “prestazioni elevate”.

Detto ciò, non ci resta che sperare nella prossima uscita, con la speranza che la primavera ci porti qualcosa di funzionante.

Come ogni mese, eccoci all’appuntamento con la nuova release da parte di ATI/AMD dei propri driver grafici, versione 8.12 (download).

Le novità introdotte da questa versione sono il supporto al SurroundView e vari bugfix, tra cui crash di sistema all’esecuzione di glxgears, il Catalyst Control Center non riconosce il tipo di display connesso e molti altri…

Con questa versione, i driver grafici Ati supportano ufficialmente Xorg 7.4, risolvendo così i problemi di molti utenti.

Rilasciati da qualche giorno i nuovi driver 8.10 per schede grafiche ATI. Manca ancora il supporto ad Xorg 7.4 anche se sui repository Ubuntu Intrepid è disponibile una versione del driver che lo supporta.

Ho appena letto dell’uscita dei nuovi driver ATI, gli 8.9, e senza neanche leggere changelog e prime impressioni mi sono messo ad installarli sulla mia Ubuntu 8.04 con kernel 2.6.26.

Disinstallo i vecchi driver (8.8)

sudo sh /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh

quindi procedo con l’installazione dei nuovi

chmod +x ati-driver-installer-8-9-x86.x86_64.run

sudo sh ./ati-driver-installer-8-9-x86.x86_64.run

terminata l’installazione riavvio il computer.

La prima cosa che vado a controllare è che tutto sia andato bene, quindi fglrxinfo e ATI Catalyst Control Center.

La sorpresa, che poi dovrebbe essere la normalità (!!!), la vedo aprendo il Catalyst Control Center: finalmente la dimensione della memoria è riconosciuta correttamente e mostra gli effettivi 256MByte della mia scheda video, contro i 128 mostrati da un paio di release ad oggi.

AMD ha rilasciato i driver di agosto (8.8) per schede video ATI, di cui è possibile effettuare il download a questo link.

Con questa release vengono introdotte molte novità più o meno interessanti, prima fra tutte, il kernel 2.6.26 è finalmente supportato, quindi niente più patch.

Le altre novità riguardano il supporto al CrossFireX per la serie HD4800; supporto all’antialiasing adattativo; Ati OverDrive e MultiView per le schede video abilitate; auto determinazione ed installazione del package specifico per la distribuzione linux in uso, con la possibilità di effettuare, grazie a Dryrun, un test per verificare che tutte le dipendenze siano installate.

Grazie al riconoscimento automatico del sistema operativo basterà scrivere --buildpkg oppure --buildandinstallpkg senza, come era necessario, aggiungere l’OS.

Per la verifica delle dipendenze va aggiunto Dryrun dopo --buildpkg o --buildandinstallpkg.

Per installare i driver bisogna disinstallare eventuali versioni precedenti, per chi come me ha usato lo script kanotix, deve rimuovere i seguenti pacchetti

sudo apt-get remove fglrx-amdcccle fglrx-kernel-source xorg-driver-fglrx

assicurarsi di avere blacklistato il modulo fglrx

sudo gedit /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common

DISABLED_MODULES=”fglrx”

Installare le dipendenze

sudo apt-get install build-essential cdbs fakeroot dh-make debhelper debconf libstdc++5 dkms linux-headers-$(uname -r)

Assegnare i permessi di esecuzione all’installer Ati

chmod +x ati-driver-installer-8-8-x86.x86_64.run

quindi eseguire l’installer

sudo sh ./ati-driver-installer-8-8-x86.x86_64.run

alla fine dell’installazione riavviate il pc.

Se tutto è andato per il meglio, e credo proprio di si fglrxinfo vi restituirà quanto segue

La cosa che più interessa di questa versione sarà vedere se l’installazione su kernel 2.6.26 andrà a buon fine, senza bidogno di applicare alcuna patch.

Update: Stessa situazione dei driver 8.6, almeno con il kernel 2.6.26, bisogna aspettare la patch altrimenti non si installano correttamente

E’ da poco uscita la versione stabile del kernel 2.6.26 e, come me, tanti lo hanno compilato ed installato sulla propria distribuzione Linux. C’è però un piccolo problema che riguarda i possessori di schede video Ati: i driver proprietari fglrx non vengono installati correttamente. L’errore riportato è

La soluzione a questi errori (che possono verificarsi anche con i kernel 2.6.25) consiste nell’applicare una patch ai driver Ati in modo da renderli compatibili con il kernel 2.6.26 (o 2.6.25).

A tal proposito ci da una mano uno script che farà tutto al posto nostro, patch e installazione dei driver.

Una volta scaricato il file install-fglrx-debian.sh bisogna applicargli i giusti permessi per renderlo eseguibile

chmod 755 install-fglrx-debian.sh

Adesso, per proseguire, abbiamo bisogno della connessione internet attiva (per permettere allo script di scaricare i driver Ati), e di passare alla shell testuale.
Per passare alla shell testuale bisogna premere Ctrl+Alt+F1.

Da shell eseguiamo il nostro script

sudo ./install-fglrx-debian.sh

Se ricevete un errore relativo a Kanotix non preoccupatevi.

Lo script farà tutto da solo: scaricherà i driver, li patcherà (se necessario) per renderli compatibili con il nostro kernel, creerà i pacchetti deb e li installerà.

Terminata l’installazione riavviate il pc.

A questo punto verifichiamo che tutto sia andato bene con fglrxinfo
se l’output risulta come questo

i driver sono installati correttamente ma bisogna aggiustare un collegamento, così

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2 /usr/lib/libGL.so.1

adesso, al comando fglrxinfo l’output sarà quello giusto.

E’ da poco stata rilasciata la versione 8.04 dei driver proprietari ATI. Nel changelog riportato qui sotto si può notare il supporto alla prossima release di Ubuntu, Hardy Heron, e cosa molto più importante (se è quello che ho capito io ) la visualizzazione dei video con player che utilizzano l’estensione XVideo non mostrerà più colori sbagliati e, soprattutto, a schermo intero non verranno visualizzate ombre addizionali, per una visione più nitida delle immagini.

Li ho appena installati senza alcun problema, ormai la procedura di installazione sembra non creare più i fastidiosi problemi delle versioni precedenti.
Ho cambiato la modalità di uscita dei video, nelle impostazioni di VLC, da X11 a XVideo ed il risultato è:
1. Con Compiz-Fusion attivo il video lampeggia all’impazzata, quindi bisogna tornare ad X11 e tenersi i video sgranati.
2. Con Metacity i video sono di qualità superiore rispetto a prima, soprattutto nella visualizzazione a schermo intero, video nitido e colori “reali“.
